The ceramic tradition of Vietri sul Mare began in the medieval period and became firmly established between the 15th and 16th centuries, when the town became one of the main ceramic centers of southern Italy. Thanks to the trade networks of the Repubblica di Amalfi, Vietri tableware and majolica circulated through Mediterranean ports. In the 20th century, ceramics experienced a new season with the arrival of Italian and foreign artists who renewed motifs and colors while keeping the traditional technique of hand‑painted majolica alive. Even today Vietri is considered the ceramic capital of the Costiera Amalfitana.
