The Vara di Messina originated in the 16th century as a processional structure dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. Every year, on August 15, it is pulled through the streets of the city as a grand sacred theater in motion. The votive model appeared as a domestic form of devotion: small reproductions offered in thanks for a grace received or kept at home as protection. After the 1908 earthquake, the Vara also became a symbol of collective rebirth, and the models continued to circulate as a material memory of the celebration.
