Limoncello originated as a homemade preparation along the Costiera Amalfitana between the 19th and early 20th centuries. Amalfi families used the peels of local lemons to create a natural digestif liqueur, making use of the abundant Sfusato Amalfitano. Over time, the artisanal recipe was refined and passed down, eventually becoming a symbol of the Amalfi territory and its agricultural and maritime culture.
