Nadalin in Verona

Nadalin is a traditional Veronese dessert with a star shape, made with simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs, pine nuts, and raisins. Its texture is compact and slightly crunchy on the surface, very different from the soft consistency of modern pandoro. It is decorated with sugar crystals and almonds, giving it a rustic yet festive appearance. It is a dessert deeply connected to the Christmas season and to the family traditions of the city.

Nadalin is considered the oldest Christmas dessert in the Veronese tradition and represents a key element of local culinary identity. In Verona it is often seen as the predecessor of pandoro, which was created centuries later but is now far more widespread. Despite the fame of pandoro, Nadalin remains for many Veronese people the truly authentic holiday dessert. Its presence on Christmas tables evokes a domestic and communal atmosphere tied to memory and the city’s traditions.
