An intelligence trained on Italy, not a generalist
The scanner isn't ChatGPT with an Italian hat. It's a system tailored for Italian craftsmanship: specialised prompts, knowledge of PDO/PGI marks, a map of regional schools (Vietri, Murano, Deruta, Caltagirone…) and a direct link to our editorial database.
Understands the object and its geography
Recognises style, materials and provenance. Tells Vietri ceramics from Caltagirone ones, real Murano from imitation, PDO balsamic from generic vinegar.
Scores authenticity transparently
Each result comes with an authenticity rating (authentic / touristy / uncertain / non-Italian) and a confidence percentage. No magic black-box.
Links to Trouvenir's editorial knowledge
When the object belongs to a mapped city we send you to its page with editorial-verified shops. The AI suggests, the editorial team confirms.
Three steps to discover the story of a souvenir
Frame the object
Open the scanner, frame the souvenir with good light and make sure it fills most of the shot. It works on craftsmanship, packaged food and typical items.
Take or upload a photo
On mobile you use the native camera, on desktop you can drag and drop an image. We compress the photo on your device to save bandwidth and battery.
Get the cultural analysis
Within seconds you see the name, origin, history, meaning and an authenticity rating. If the item is connected to a city, we link you to the page with verified shops.
Souvenirs and Italian products the scanner can read
The scanner is tuned for Italian craftsmanship and gastronomy. The more characteristic the object, the sharper the analysis.
Ceramics and maiolica
Vietri, Deruta, Caltagirone, Grottaglie, Faenza: hand-painted decoration, characteristic glazes, workshop marks. The scanner identifies style and origin.
Murano glass
Venetian blown glass, millefiori, sommerso, avventurina. The AI checks whether the object looks like the work of a genuine Murano furnace.
Example: Venice →Leather and bagmaking
Vegetable-tanned leather, Florentine handwork, belts, wallets, notebooks. The scanner reads typical tanning and stitching details.
Example: Florence →Marbled paper and bookbinding
Florentine, Venetian and Amalfi marbled paper, bookmarks, hand-bound notebooks. Recognises patterns and techniques.
Example: Amalfi →Textiles and embroidery
Lucanian linen, Como silk, Burano lace, Sardinian textiles, Abruzzese wool. It tells artisanal weaving from industrial souvenir.
Packaged gastronomy
EVO oil, PGI pastas, packaged PDO cheeses, typical sweets, regional liqueurs. The scanner reads labels and marks (PDO, PGI, TSG).
Traditional instruments
Neapolitan mandolins, Abruzzese organetto, Sardinian launeddas, terracotta whistles. Recognises shape and materials.
Example: Naples →Nativity and devotional
San Gregorio Armeno shepherds, Apulian nativities, icons, wax ex-voto, devotional objects. The AI tells regional schools apart.

What you can discover by scanning
A selection of typical analyses picked by the Trouvenir editorial team.
- Authentic souvenir
Vietri sul Mare ceramics
Hand-painted, characteristic Amalfi Coast glazes, workshop signature on the back. The scanner returns origin, centuries of tradition and verified shops where to buy.
- Likely imitation
Generic carnival mask
Industrial Venetian mask bought under the arcades. The AI flags missing maker marks and points to a certified bottega in Castello.
- Uncertain identification
Packaged oil without PDO mark
Bottle bought at a street stall. The scanner recognises an EVOO but doesn't read a PDO/PGI mark: confidence drops and we suggest an equivalent PDO entry.
- Authentic souvenir
Florentine marbled paper
Pattern handmade by a historic Florentine bindery. The scanner identifies the comb technique and links to certified Oltrarno workshops.
- Not Italian
Industrial tourist figurine
Resin Colosseum replica produced outside Italy. The AI flags it as a non-Italian souvenir and suggests artisanal alternatives in the same city.
- Authentic souvenir
Traditional Balsamic Vinegar PDO
Truncated-cone bottle with the Consorzio seal. The scanner reads the PDO mark and reconstructs 25 years of cask ageing.

AI scanner questions
Is the scanner really free?
Yes. You get 10 free scans per month per account, exactly as in the Trouvenir app. Signing in with Google or Apple is required — the same protection we apply on iOS and Android to keep access fair and AI costs under control. The mobile app unlocks unlimited scans with a single one-time Premium purchase, no recurring subscription.
Do I need to sign up or create an account?
Yes, signing in with Google or Apple is required. It takes two taps and we don't ask for anything else. Without an account we can't enforce the monthly per-user quota; this aligns the web with the app, which has always been tied to an identifiable device.
What does the AI actually do?
The AI identifies the object as a potential Italian souvenir or cultural product, suggests a name and alternative names, reconstructs origin, history and cultural meaning and flags it as authentic, touristy, uncertain or non-Italian.
How accurate is it? Can I trust it?
The AI is highly confident on characteristic items (Italian ceramics, Murano glass, Florentine leather, PDO cheeses) and less confident on generic objects. Each analysis comes with a confidence level: cross-check it against Trouvenir's verified shops before buying.
What happens to my data?
Uploaded images are sent encrypted to our analysis service and never published. We don't collect personal data; the scan counter is tied to an anonymous browser ID that you can rotate at any time.
What objects don't work well?
People, landscapes, animals, generic consumer items (smartphones, sneakers) and non-Italian products fall outside the scanner's scope. If the object isn't a souvenir, the AI will tell you.
Can I use the scanner on iPhone?
Yes. iOS Safari opens the native camera directly when you tap 'Take or upload a photo'. The same applies to Chrome Android and any desktop browser.
Why are some features only in the app?
The verified shops map, audio editorial paths, unlimited scans and the history of your finds live in the app because they need local storage, reliable geolocation and a travel-optimised experience.
Can I scan typical dishes?
The scanner is tuned for craftsmanship and packaged products. For freshly cooked dishes (cacio e pepe, arancini and so on) read our 'What to eat' guide on the city page.
Can I suggest a souvenir you don't recognise?
Yes. If the scanner is wrong or doesn't recognise an item, message us on Instagram (@trouvenir_italia) or download the app to submit it directly to the content team.
