The tradition of the Giants of Messina dates back to the 16th century, when the city Senate commissioned enormous procession statues depicting Mata and Grifone, the legendary progenitors of the Peloritani lineage. They parade through the city streets especially in the days around August 15, during the celebrations of the Vara and the patronal festivities. The figure of Mata, a woman of Messina, and that of Grifone, a warrior of Moorish origins, weave together myth, history, and popular legend, recounting encounters and conflicts between cultures and communities. This narrative has been passed down through the centuries through festivities, storytelling, and popular performances.
